Unlocking Local Currency Investments: Guarantees, Infrastructure & Green Growth
Nairobi
(EAT)
Summary
East Africa has significant domestic capital available, but much of it remains concentrated in government securities rather than financing productive sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy and digital infrastructure. Dhamana bridges this gap through local currency credit guarantees that de-risk investments, unlock institutional capital and enable longer-term, more affordable financing, as demonstrated by its first landmark transaction supporting Safaricom’s solarisation programme.
Details
The session will explore how local capital can be channelled into high-impact infrastructure, climate and corporate projects across East Africa, and the role guarantees can play in making these investments more viable. Through the “Making Local Currency Work: From Idle Funding to Impact Investments” session, participants will examine how domestic capital can be better deployed into infrastructure and renewable energy, while the “Inside the Dealroom: Transactions and Market Spotlight” will provide a practical look at real deals, current market dynamics and Dhamana’s growing transaction portfolio and pipeline. The session will also highlight Dhamana’s first transaction, the KES 2.5 billion Safaricom–Ofgen Power Equipment Lease Project, supporting the deployment of solar PV systems across 500 Safaricom sites in Kenya. The transaction demonstrates how guarantees can unlock local capital for sustainable infrastructure while supporting energy efficiency and net-zero objectives.
